When I first started, way back in September of 2014, castles befuddled me initially. The way they come out in game play is straight forward, but the setting them up. So I thought my fellow noobs would be interested in how they are set up and some advice for what should go first to best help promotion.

First off, voodoo castles and ship castles are separate. You get 1 free slot for each. For Voodoo you just enter Ship Castle from the Shipyard menu, click on the Buy Slot button and it is set up for a level 1 Voodoo Skill. Next you would need to upgrade a Voodoo Skill in the adjacent window. Once this is done, you must activate the skill selected to see it in game play in your open slot.

Ship castles are slightly different in that they are broken up into Forecastle, Topcastle and Aftcastle. Each of these has specific skill lists to that castle but are related, in that you will only get one free castle in the three possible positions, each with 3 slots. So you get 1 free castle here and have to buy the 8 others with a schedule that looks like this I suspect:

    1st castle slot - Free 2nd castle slot - 75,000 prls
    3rd castle slot - 150,000 prls 4th castle slot - 225,000 prls
    5th castle slot - 300,000 prls 6th castle slot - 375,000 prls
    7th castle slot - 450,000 prls 8th castle slot - 525,000 prls
    9th castle slot - 600,000 prls
    * This is a projection, I don't have 9 castles and it is likely a best case scenario.

Because of the great pearl expense here, it is vitally important that you select the proper castle for the skill you would like to add to your ship. You should review all skills and select ones that will allow you to progress in the game and finish scrolls (Virgo Map, Capricorn Map,...)which are the best way to advance early on.

Slots and skill must each be upgraded. A level 2 slot is needed for a level 2 skill and a level 6 slot is needed for a level 6 skill! If you advance a skill well ahead of it's slot then you will lose access to it(will not be able to activate the slot with the desired skill) until the slot catches up! The reverse is not true, a level 6 slot can be filled with a level 1 skill.

Also, just because you only have 3 slots, it does not mean it is pointless to upgrade only 3 skills. You may activate a skill for one mission, deactivate it and then activate another for another mission. For example, deactivate Sternpost in the Aftcastle you used for your shinny hunt, for Harpoon loader also in the Aftcastle (Assuming both skills Do Not exceed the level of the slot to which you would like to assign them.) to take your pirate test.

Castle Days come up every so often and during them you get 25% off the purchase price of slots, slot upgrades and skill upgrades. Slots are the most expensive and during these events it is good to have saved up enough pearls to open at least one slot, (Kudos to the pirate disciplined enough to be able to open more!) slot upgrades are the next most expensive it appears and skills the least, but still pricey. If you are going to upgrade something on a non-event day, let it be the cheaper of these!

I personally believe you will derive more benefit from many skills operating at once vice one skill at 6th level, hence undergoing the pain of gratification delayed and saving and opening slots on Castle Days. That is not to say you should open all slots before acquiring a level 2 slot and skill. Balance should be exercised, not only with this, but Gems, cannons and decks, and skills located in the Cabin menu under Skill Tree. They all contribute to the overall functioning of your vessel and none is overwhelmingly more important than another.

I hope this has helped my fellow noobs. If I've misstated something I'm sure a vet or a mod will iron out any corrections that are needed. Please encourage fellow noobs in your servers to come to the forum, to ask questions, read over the Seafight Bible/General FAQs and help the game to be fun for all!

It largely depends on what your primary strategy is and how much you are spending and time you devote to the game, but I think and this is merely an opinion by a fairly new player, my top 5 looks like this:

    1. Cannon Loader
    2. Adamantine Hull
    3. Sternpost
    4. Centerboard
    5. Astrolabe/Gunpowder Flask

As I noted in the opening post you can switch (deactivate/activate) castle skills so having Harpoon loader to assist with tests and wrecks when they are available is a must, especially as you go up in level switching with Sternpost. I started out with speed as being the first I got to assist in glitter hunts. But I promote/value Cannon Loader and Adamantine Hull for doing scrolls and npc's in the events most. Astrolabe and Gunpowder Flask are pricey for the effect, but they will save ammo by increasing damage. I do think having the slot here open is a good idea but I would leave them at level one and acquire/increase the slot to accommodate Carpentry Expertise that I would level up. You can easily switch to this in the ship castle menu when necessary.

    For Voodoo Castle:
    1. Voodoo Mirage
    2. Voodoo Ritual
    3. Voodoo Bundling

The order here is much more given to argument as to which should be first and they are much more quickly attainable then Ship castles because the slots are acquired without respect to Ship Castles.

If you guys are going for glitters, buy sternpost and centerboard (in that order). The astrolabe increases your hit chance in an important rate. You should probably go first for the astrolabe and then for the powder flask. The cannon loader is important too, but buy it when you need to shoot faster. Remember not to upgrade to level 6 as the last level should be bought when you have all the others to level 5.

My castle set up is this:

    Forecastle

    6 / 6 Cannon loader

    5 / 6 Adamantine hull

    5 / 6 Centerboard

    Topcastle

    6 / 6 Gunpowder flask

    5 / 6 Astrolabe

    5 / 6 Carpentry expertise

    Aftcastle

    6 / 6 Sternpost

    6 / 6 Cannon storage

    Voodoo Castle

    5 / 6 Voodoo mirage

I hope to get pearls before next castle day because I am broke at the moment. Only got 180k pearls.
